The history of Hotel La Casona, Mexico City

The dream that eventually converted into Hotel La Casona, was realised in 1994 by Sr. Rudolph L. Roth, his brother Frederick A. Roth, and his father Werner Roth. The family are of Swiss origin, and both brothers are graduates from the Lausanne Hotel School in Switzerland, their dream was to open a European style hotel in Mexico, which is their birth country.

After many years searching for the right property, Sr. Frederick found an old construction ready for remodalation. Located in Durango street # 280 in the Colonia Roma the building was only one block from the old bull ring (where the "Palacio de Hierro" shop is now), the building was originally constructed by the engineer M. Hernández Cabrera in 1923. Originally the building was constructed as a block of six houses, that had eight living spaces inside. The outside was in an eclectic style was tipical of the house style that marked the porfirian era at the end of the IX century and the beginning of the XX century. Although the building is dated to 1923, it is possibly one of the last complete constructions in the style of that century, as the rest of the surrounding buildings (in the Colonia Hipódromo-Condesa) of that era show the first signs of the art-deco and other periods.

In 1994 Mexico was in a financial crisis for political reasons. The real estate business was at a low, and this particular project was seen as a high risk. Almost a year past, and the deal for the building that is now Hotel La Casona was not made. Just before the project was about to be abandoned, a small bank that had just opened it's doors for business decided to give the loan.

The remodelation of the property was started immediately. The remodelation was undertaken with the priority of keeping the original aspects of the buiding, and the original spaces, heights and free areas of the building were respected. The result was an interpretation of what the building could have looked like if it was originally construted as a hotel and not as separate houses.

Hotel La Casona opened it's doors for business in 1996, every hotel room was decorated individually and the central theme was music and musical instruments, the classic styles and art giving the hotel an artistic touch with an eclectic style. Hotel La Casona backed up by the best of European hotel experience is listed with the National Institute of fine arts. The now elegant outside and interior patios beautifully frame the 29 exclusive rooms, which are distributed over 2 floors. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the porfirian era, and gives the hotel guest a feeling of stepping into the past, but with all the modern comforts of the present day, and a personalised, highly experienced service. Hotel La Casona also offers excellent cuisine in it's Restaurant, that focuses on International cuisine with a touch of French. The hotel also offers a meeting room, gymnasium, steam bath, wireless Internet and other services that the modern businessman demands.

The hotel enjoys a privilaged location in the heart of Mexico City, but at the same time in a place that leaves behind the bustle of the city. Hotel La Casona is very close to Chapultepec Castle, Paseo de la Reforma, and only a few minutes walk from the Mexico City Anthropology Museum, theatres, concert halls and the main financial and commercial centers of the city.

Through the years Hotel La Casona has demonstrated that the "boutique" hotel model is possible even in the complicated structure of modern day Mexico City, and until a few years ago the hotel was the only hotel of this kind that existed in the city. Today, the hotel is still family owned and operated, although the staff has become amplified due to three children that have also studied and graduated from the Lausanne Hotel School.
